Three vehicles collided in Gloucester County on Sunday afternoon, killing a man from Norfolk, according to Virginia State Police. VSP troopers responded to the collision on Route 17 (George Washington Memorial Highway) at Woods Cross Road just before 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.
George Asbell, the driver of a Nissan sedan, struck a Harley Davidson motorbike on Davenport Road while travelling eastward and neglected to yield at the junction, according to VSP’s investigation. The motorbike was riding on Route 17 heading north.
According to troopers, the motorcyclist then struck a Chevrolet sedan travelling west on Woods Cross Road at Route 17 that was halted at a stop sign.
After being flung off the motorbike, Jack John Russo, Jr., 68, and his passenger, Angela Marie Russo, 56, were transported to Riverside Regional Hospital with critical injuries.
According to troopers, Jack John Russo, Jr. passed away in the hospital from his wounds.
Christine Cormier, 42, the driver of the Chevrolet sedan, escaped injury from the collision.
Asbell faces charges related to careless driving.
Although the cause of the crash is still being investigated, VSP troopers stated that neither speed nor alcohol had a role in the collision.
